Kruella's story
10/17/2018 Yellow, kids 10+, dog by dog.
Ella is the timider one of the three that came into together. She is normally laying in her pen relaxing, but when we got her out of the pen she was a little more excited and ready to get out and about. Once we were in the evaluation room she started to become a little timid again, and was hesitant to come and approach us. She would keep walking around the room looking at everything and sniffing away, then she would come up to us, and stay just out of reach then take off again before we could touch her. She also lacks recall, and she would be considered a flight risk.
She was tolerant of her handling test, but you could see she was more distracted, looking for something. A way out, food, her siblings, we are not sure. But her distraction really made it harder to get to know her. Hopefully once she gets settled into the shelter, and the volunteers start to work with her that will change, and once she is in a real home that she would have the chance to bond with her family.
She did fairly well with her stability test, sounds, and textures did not bother her. But visual stimulation like a fast movement frightened her and it took her a little longer to recover from that and check out the cause.
She could also use a little work on her correction, sometimes you have to correct her several times to get her to stop and focus. But these are just some minor things that some socialization, and basic obedience should help with
For her food test she was a little tense when she was eating and did eat on the faster side of things, but at no point did she try to bite. Also considering how thin she was when she got here it is not surprising that she would be a little tense and eating a bit faster. But with any dog you should ere on the side of caution, and not allow children near a dog when it is eating, or chewing on something, always feed pets separate, and if the dog something it should not. Trade for it, never just grab it. Just grabbing it away can start to make guarding behavior develop, because they will think you want to take everything away from them.
Kruella was very timid during her stranger test, and avoided the contact at all costs and even hid behind her handlers. She is going to be one where you will need to take it slow with new people and just let her kind of go at her own pace. This is also where the socialization aspect of training will be very good for her.
For her dog test she was more aloof, and she was more interested in being outside and exploring. She did greet Ivan, but then could have cared less about him being there. We also tried to get her to engage in playing with us or with toys, and she just had not interest in it at this time.
Kurella is going to thrive best with a family that is going to work on her socialization, and her confidence building. That is what she needs the most right now. Once she is comfortable we hope that she will be a more playful and sociable girl, but only time will tell.
