Monte's story
Behavior evaluation done by KLS & AT
Blue/Orange, Kids 12+, best as only dog, or multiple meet and greets with a dog that is playful, but stable. Monte can be a bully.
In his kennel Monte is very excited to meet new people, and once you have him out that does not change. He is an excited and hyper young man. He needs to learn some leash manners, and he may do best walked on a harness. He gets to pulling and then he starts to choke himself a bit.
He was very social during his test, and always wanted to be near people and in your lap, but he is not just a lap dog, he needs someone active that can help him expel his energy, his back legs are spring loaded, and he has no problems getting face to face with someone standing.
He does ok with handling but it sets him off in to a hyper mode and he wants to go, go, go. He was not a big fan of being hugged. But he just took off running. He did not try to bite at this time.
In general Monte was stable with sound, and new textures under his feet, but fast movements that startled him and it took him longer to recover from it.
With correction, he became fearful, and moved away, but he always kept focus on his handler wanting to please them. He may have been over corrected. He wants to be a good boy, he is just not sure how to do that fully yet.
Monte did not show signs of guarding food but is always best to use caution and not allow children near a dog when it is eating, or chewing on something, always feed pets separate, and if the dog has something it should not. Trade for it, never just grab it. Just grabbing it away can actually start to make guarding behavior develop, because they will think you want to take everything away from them.
Toys now they were a bit different, he did not growl, or try to bite, but he took what was his and ran with it to hide behind a chair while he played with it. He did not want it take from him. So you may have to use the treat trade method with him. And when he is in his *safe zone* with something, just let him alone, he is happy in that moment.
Strangers do not seem to be much of a concern for him, but he can be a little rude, using his spring loaded legs to get as much attention as he can.
Monte is the rule maker when he was meeting Napoleon, he wanted it on his terms, and even then he was still a bit rude and cocky. Monte would do best as an only dog, or maybe with one that is not going to be a bully back, but also not let Monte push them around.
Monte is active, hyper, and full of life. He would do well in a dog sport, agility, or something like that. He could use that the help with socialization, leash manners, how to properly interact with other dogs, and it would help him find something positive to do with all that energy.
